RBANM (Rai Bahadur Arcot Narrainsawmy Mudaliar) School

RBANM (Rai Bahadur Arcot Narrainsawmy Mudaliar) school In Bangalore is one of Bangalore's oldest Tamil schools for marginalized communities, founded in 1873. In the 1870s, it was very difficult for children from marginalized communities to get formal education.
Narrainswamy Mudaliar, a businessman-philanthropist whose father had migrated to Bangalore from Arcot, TamilNadu,  founded this school as a way for these children to learn both English, Tamil and to get exposed to formal education.

While exploring the streets of Halasuru, we came across RBANM’s high school, located on Gangadhara Chetty Road.  We went inside and looked around, requesting to talk to somebody from the school management to understand the schools history more. Our interview of a member of the school management can be seen in YouTube here

Narrainswamy Mudaliar subsequently founded multiple educational institutions in the area. For the services he rendered to the society, he was conferred the title “Rai Bahadur” from the British and “Dharmarathakara” from Mysore Maharaja.
Incidentally, India’s first school for girls was founded just 25 yrs earlier by Savitribai Phule in Pune, also known for her efforts against caste discrimination
